It’s 2018, my people! I hope you all celebrated (safely, obvi) in some way and enjoyed the holiday. January 1st is just another date, yes, but it certainly feels like a fresh start. I took the time to really think about resolutions and goals I’d like to set for myself. I’m sharing them on the blog so that I can hold myself accountable and make it official.
1. Drink at least 3 liters of water a day + limit alcohol
This is one of the easiest things in my life to do and yet, I’ve been really bad about it in the past. All I have to do is drink water for f*ck’s sake. I just forget, ya know? I forget until I wake up in the middle of the night like a dried up SpongeBob Squarepants in the Sahara desert. We’re made up of like, 60% water, so it’s pretty important. I always feel much more energized and alive when I’m hydrated. Being hydrated also makes a world of difference in my skin, so I’d like to make hydration a priority.
I work in the food/hospitality industry. If you ever have, then you know it’s easy to have “just one drink” frequently. When the night is winding down, it’s not uncommon to find me running the numbers with a glass of red wine in hand. I’d like to limit my weekly intake to five alcoholic beverages, unless I’m on vacation or there’s a special occasion. My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Spain and if you don’t think I’m going to drink red wine, sangria and vermouth with every meal then you clearly don’t know me at all.
2. Eat more vegetables + cook more
This is another goal I’d like to prioritize. I used to be so good about eating my veggies, but alas, times have changed. I currently manage a restaurant/bar and am at work about 50 hours a week, so I don’t eat too many meals at home. It probably doesn’t help that the restaurant I work at serves a plethora of delicious fried items. When I was living in NYC, I drank a green smoothie every day but got rid of my blender when I moved to Los Angeles – why? I do not know. That being said, I just bought this blender, which comes with resealable lids so I can take my smoothies to go. No excuses.
As far as cooking more, I want to be realistic here. I work at least five days a week, from about 3 to 11 PM. I try (key word: try) to be productive during the day, so am often out and about. It’s realistic to aim for cooking two dishes a week (yielding two meals each, as I live alone). I’d also like to cook at least one meal a week with my boyfriend. We both love dining out together (all the Korean barbecue, please) and agree that we should try cooking more meals instead.
3. Work out 4 times a week
I was very good about this once upon a time, as well. Not so much anymore. I like to say this is because I work so much (I do), but I can definitely stand to wake up a little earlier and sneak a workout in a few days a week. I pay for a nice gym membership, and I would love to use it more often.
4. Be more consistent with my blog and YouTube
This one is pretty self-explantatory. I haven’t been consistent with my uploads on YouTube or with my blog posts. Again, I am a busy bee, but I definitely have the time to write/film/edit more, I just need to make more of an effort. I’m working on creating a realistic upload/post schedule that will hopefully help me out.
5. Create my own work
As some of you may know, I am an actress. The reason I moved to Los Angeles was to pursue acting, and while I go on auditions I’m called in for, I could do a lot more myself. I recently wrote my first ever script (for a web-series pilot) and actually let other people read it. I am so self-conscious when it comes to sharing my work, so that was a huge step for me. It was received well, and I’m working towards actually shooting it! I’d like to do more of that in the new year.
6. Read at least one book a month
I know, I know, HOW PATHETIC is it that my reading goal is one book a month?! Whatever, that’s where I’m at right now. I used to read all the time when I was living in NYC. Spending so much time on the train allowed me to read, but now that my main mode of transportation is my car, that’s not the case. I love reading (mostly fiction) and want to get back into it. My Goodreads unread shelf is waiting. I’m currently reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
7. Create + stick to a budget
I’m usually pretty good about my spending habits, but this year I’d like to track all my finances. I know I can definitely cut down on unnecessary spending (coffee at a coffee shop when I can drink delicious, free coffee at work), so tracking every dollar I spend will be helpful.
8. Get savings to $10,000
When I think of how terrible I was at saving money in my early twenties (okay, up until now, really), I want to kick myself. This is an attainable goal, but it’s nice to put a specific number out there to hold myself accountable.
9. Use products I already have + cut down on unnecessary beauty purchases
Oh boy, this is a big one. I recently took an inventory of all my beauty products, and it was definitely an eye-opener. The amount of products I have compared to the amount of products I use doesn’t make sense. I recently started my first Project Pan to encourage myself to use products I already have in my collection instead of going out and buying new things. Repurchases of holy grail products are okay, and I’ll allow myself to buy some new releases and other products that interest me. I will keep a list of products I’d like, and will refrain from impulsively buying anything not on the list.
10. Meditate or go to yoga at least twice a week
When I lived in NYC (drink every time I say that in this post) I went to yoga frequently. It was me-time. I’ve struggled with meditation – I either fall asleep or I indulge my thoughts too much – but yoga was moving meditation for me. I focused on my breath and the position and that was it. Since moving to LA, I’ve stopped going and I would love to get back into it. I’m able to take classes with my gym membership so I have no excuse. I’d also like to try meditating again and not beat myself up wen I can’t get to a zen-like state effortlessly. I welcome any recommendations for guided meditations or podcasts!
11. Travel to another country
I haven’t had a proper vacation in a minute. And by a minute I mean years. I’ve got some vacation days saved up and my boyfriend and I are planning a trip, hopefully within the next couple of months! We’re thinking of starting in Spain and taking the train down to France. I am so ready.
12. Explore Southern California
I live in a place people go to vacation. And I’ve hardly explored it. I know, I know. When I lived in NYC (drink) it seemed a lot easier to explore the city. I could just get off at a different subway stop and explore that neighborhood, or take the long way home. In LA, I have to plan to explore – figure out where I’m going, get in my car and drive there, park (help us all), and move forward from there. There are so many cool things to do and places to see in LA, so I’m going to make a bucket list of sorts. There are also so many amazing places within driving distance I’d love to visit. Big Bear, Big Sur, Monterey (so I can live my Big Little Lies dreams), and Death Valley are all drivable!
I find writing so helpful. Getting thoughts, ideas, dreams, fears, concerns, everything out of my head and onto paper is cathartic. I’ve started a bullet journal and plan on using that to organize my thoughts and schedule. It’s also amazing to read old journal entries and see how far I’ve come without realizing it. Move forward, always.
