Summer is HERE, and I’m feeling the heat here in Los Angeles. My makeup routine changes along with the change in weather. Basically, I’m a lot, um…shinier (read: sweatier) in the summer and need some help looking (and staying) fabulous. In this post, I’m rounding up some of my must-have beauty products for summer! I’m working on a more in-depth “lip products for summer” video, so stay tuned for that.
BELIF – THE TRUE CREAM AQUA BOMB ($38), Sephora
I love The True Cream – Moisturizing Bomb from belif, so it’s no surprise I enjoy its sister product. Ths Aqua Bomb is oil-free and extremely lightweight, while still providing tons of moisture to the skin, making it perfect for summer. It’ll leave your skin refreshed and hydrated without feeling like a greaseball.
DERMA E – MICRODERMABRASION SCRUB WITH DEAD SEA SALT ($29.99), Ulta
I find myself going for “no-makeup” makeup looks more frequently in the summer, so I want my skin to be as on point as it can be. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Los Angeles can get pretty hot and dry in the summer. Patchy, flaky skin isn’t really a great look on me, so I like to use an exfoliating scrub once or twice a week. This scrub from Derma E is fantastic. It’s fine enough so that it doesn’t feel like you’re just rubbing sandpaper all over your face, and contains lots of good-for-you ingredients, such as citrus oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E. It smells like oranges and leaves my skin feeling soooo soft and smooth, creating the perfect base, with or without makeup.
KISS MY FACE – SENSITIVE SIDE 3-IN-1 SUNSCREEN LOTION ($11.19), Walgreens
Obviously the #1 most important thing to remember in the summer is to protect your skin from the sun. We often take care of the skin on our body as far as suncare goes, but neglect our faces. Suuuuuure, the sun’s all, “Oh, let me give you a tan! Let me warm your skin. That feels nice, huh? Yeaaaaaah, bask in my warm glory for hours…that’s right…” but that son of a bish can really mess you up. I recommend a facial sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This one from Kiss My Face is water-resistant, doesn’t contain harmful ingredients (so it’s great for sensitive skin) and doesn’t test on animals. It also wears well under makeup, so if you’re trying to protect your skin and still get glam, this is a great option.
SMASHBOX PHOTO FINISH PRIMER WATER ($32.00), Sephora
Priming skin for makeup is especially important in the summer months. Some primers out there can leave skin feeling super icky – greasy, slippery, etc. This primer water (yes, water) from Smashbox is quite the solution. It’s free of silicone, alcohol and oil, meaning it isn’t slippery, drying, or greasy. Priming with a spray leaves skin feeling and looking refreshed and hydrated. It can also be used as a setting spray to refresh your makeup throughout the day and make you feel like less of a hot, sweaty monster.
I have normal/combination skin, and in the summer I can lean a little closer to the combination side. Things start slipping and sliding around in a very un-cute way. When my face feels oily, the last thing I want to do is apply a sunscreen to make me feel even more slippery. This primer is fantastic because it combines SPF 50 with a mattifying primer. It can be worn alone to reduce shine and protect your skin from the sun, or with makeup – from a light tinted moisturizer to a full face of cake.
L’OREAL MAGIC LUMI LIGHT INFUSING PRIMER ($12.99), Ulta
This primer from L’Oreal adds just the right amount of luminosity to the skin. It works for all skin types, because oily folks deserve radiant skin, too. It can be combined with your foundation, or can be applied underneath makeup for a healthy, radiant glow. Oh yeah, and it’s from the drugstore.
IT COSMETICS YOUR SKIN BUT BETTER CC CREAM WITH SPF50+ ($38.00), Ulta
If you’ve watched any of my videos, you already I’m absolutely obsessed wish this ish. This is a hydrating color-correcting cream with SPF 50, and some of the best coverage I’ve ever seen in a CC or BB cream. This formula also includes an anti-aging serum to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, pores, and all those other things we wish would disappear. It plays nicely under other makeup, but is also great on its own if you just want to even out your complexion. Basically, it’s the best.
LANCOME TEINT IDOLE ULTRA LONG WEAR FOUNDATION ($47.00), Sephora
This foundation claims to wear for 24 hours – that’s one whole damn day. This foundation is magical, because it delivers long-lasting medium-full coverage with a natural finish. It contains SPF, but only 15, so I do recommend wearing sunscreen underneath it. It’s oil-free and maintains your skin’s natural pH, so it’ll last and keep you from looking like a greaseball. Win/win.
L’OREAL INFALLIBLE PRO-GLOW FOUNDATION ($12.99), Ulta
I tend to lean towards more glowy, radiant skin in the summer rather than matte skin. The Infallibl Pro-Matte Foundation from L’Oreal is one of my absolute favorites, and I actually do like to wear it in the summer as I find the finish to be more demi-matte/satin rather than straight up matte. But if I’m trying to take my skin to the next level of luminosity, I go for the Infallible Pro-Glow. The foundation provides medium coverage and a radiant finish. Like the Lancome foundation, this one has SPF 15, so please practice sun safety and wear sunscreen underneath your makeup. The lasting power of the Infallible foundations from L’Oreal is fantastic, and this one will keep your skin looking hydrated and glowy without looking shimmery or greasy.
SEPHORA COLLECTION BRIGHT FUTURE GEL SERUM CONCEALER ($14.00), Sephora
Using lightweight formulas in the summer is extremely important, in my opinion. Lightweight formulas don’t look as cakey and tend to look more natural than heavier, more full-coverage products. This concealer from Sephora has buildable, light/medium coverage, and a gel serum consistency. It blends easily, and the color range is great. It’s going to keep your skin looking like skin, but add brightness and light/medium coverage.
NARS RADIANT CREAMY CONCEALER ($30.00), Sephora
This concealer provides a more medium to full coverage, while still looking natural on the skin. A lot of full coverage concealers can look unnatural and too heavy. This concealer provides full coverage and somehow still looks glowy and natural. Skin looks hydrated, young, plump and radiant. This concealer is a cult favorite and for good reason.
I’m a big fan of this concealer. The coverage isn’t crazy full or anything like that, but it brightens the under-eye area beautifully, without caking up at all. It blends into the skin very easily, and has a natural, radiant finish. This concealer is perfect for those no-makeup makeup days.
DERMABLEND LOOSE SETTING POWDER ($27.00), Ulta
Powder can be tricky as hell in the summer. You want something that will keep oil at bay, but won’t clump and cake up. As you may be able to tell by their name, Dermablend is a brand that focuses on skin and the needs of different skin types. This powder is fragrance-free, allergy-tested, and suited for sensitive skin. It’s finely milled, giving the skin a natural finish without caking up.
E.L.F BEAUTIFULLY BARE SHEER TINT FINISHING POWDER ($6.00), e.l.f. Cosmetics
This powder from e.l.f. is affordable, silky goodness. It helps control oil and mattify, and adds just the slightest bit of coverage. The compact makes it easy to travel with for touchups throughout the day. My biggest gripe with the product is that the shade range isn’t too impressive. The lightest shade is…not very light, though I’m happy they have a couple darker shades. If you’re looking for an affordable powder to control shine, this is a fantastic option.
MAC MINERALIZE SKINFINISH NATURAL ($33.00), MAC Cosmetics
This powder is a classic. It’s baked and contains itty bitty pearlized pigments, adding natural dimension without appearing shimmery or glittery in any way. This powder is excellent for dry skin, as it’s very lightweight and doesn’t cling to dry patches. It smooths over the skin beautifully, creating a satin, “your skin but better” finish.
TOO FACED CHOCOLATE SOLEIL MATTE BRONZER ($30.00), Sephora
I love bronzer. It’s one of the makeup products that I feel makes me look better instantly. Even when I do minimal makeup, I throw some bronzer on my face and in my crease and it makes me look awake and alive. This bronzer from Too Faced is one of my favorites. First of all, it’s infused with cocoa powder so it smells like chocolate. Second of all, the undertone of this bronzer is perfect for that natural, sunkissed glow. It has the right amount of warmth to add life to the face, without coming off orange or muddy. It blends out really well and lasts nicely on the skin. Did I mention it smells like chocolate? I did? Cool.
COVER FX CUSTOM ENHANCER DROPS ($42.00), Sephora
You’ve probably seen the highlighting version of these Custom Enhancer Drops from Cover FX floating around, but they also make shimmer-free bronzing shades. This product can be a little intimidating, as it’s a liquid bronzer, but don’t be afraid. The liquid blends out so easily, and can be as subtle as you want or built up. You can also add a couple drops to your foundation for an all-over warm glow.
PHYSICIAN’S FORMULA BUTTER BRONZER ($14.99), Ulta
You didn’t think I was going to forget this bronzer, did you? This is one of my all-time favorites. It smells like a coconut dream, which I love. I guess I just want my bronzers to smell like food. The formula itself is, well, buttery and smooth. It seems to melt and blend into the skin effortlessly, while adding a warm glow. It’s a rather hydrating powder, making it perfect for those with drier skin.
MILANI BAKED BLUSH IN LUMINOSO ($9.49), Walgreens
I know you’ve probably heard of Milani’s baked blush in Luminoso, but seriously, it’s worth the hype. It is my perfect blush for the summer. My favorite blush tones in the summer are peach and coral, and Luminoso is the most beautiful peach blush. It adds a warm, radiant, peachy flush to the cheeks, and looks fantastic with a tan. I find myself reaching for this blush more often than not in the hot summer months.
NARS BLUSH IN TORRID ($30.00), Sephora
NARS blushes are fantastic, we all know this by now. There so many beautiful shades, everyone can find something that suits them. One of my favorites for the summer is the shade, Torrid. It’s a gorgeous, warm coral with a slight gold shimmer. The shimmer isn’t chunky or even very detectable on the skin, but rather gives the cheeks a radiant glow. NARS also came out with liquid blushes recently, and Torrid is one of the available shades.
GLOSSIER CLOUD PAINT ($18.00), Glossier
Creams and liquids are your friends in the summer for that natural, effortless look. Glossier is a brand that combines skincare with makeup, so their products are dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic. Their Cloud Paints are a unique gel-cream formula and are designed to retain water, making skin appear plump and hydrated. There are only four shades, but there is a shade for everyone. This product is best applied with fingers, so it’s perfect for those looking for something quick and easy.
BENEFIT WATT’S UP! CREAM-TO-POWDER HIGHLIGHTER ($30.00), Sephora
I’m all about cream products in the summer. Anything that doesn’t require a brush gets major points in my book. Watt’s Up from Benefit is a gorgeous champagne cream-to-powder highlighter that imparts a natural, healthy glow. This is definitely more of a dewy highlighter than an intense, metallic highlighter. It easily melts into the skin when applied with a finger, and the result is seemingly naturally radiant, glowy skin.
ESSENCE PURE NUDE HIGHLIGHTER ($4.49), Ulta
This highlighter from Essence is another one that really creates that lit from within glow. Like, “Oh, yeah, I just get 8 hours of sleep every night and drink a lot of water and don’t eat sodium or drink wine by the bottle regularly”, that kinda glow. It’s not overly shimmery or glittery in any way, and imparts a natural, healthy luminosity to the skin. I love this one swept over the brow bone, cheek bones, nose and chin. You can’t go wrong with the price, either.
ANASTASIA SUNKISSED GLOW KIT ($40.00), Ulta
Alright, alright, I’ve included some intense highlighters for you in here, too. The Sundipped Glow Kit is perfect for those of you who are looking for a more dramatic, metallic highlight. The shades are perfect for the summer, too. The two lighter shades, Summer and Moonstone, work for lighter complexions, while Bronzed and Tourmaline work for deeper complexions. All four shades work fantastically wet or dry, and can be used as eyeshadow, too. Sure, the palette is $40, but you can four different shades and a ton of product. The powders in this palette are super pigmented, blendable and buttery. Drench yourself in this glow kit and you’ll automatically feel like a bronze goddess.
E.L.F. AQUA BEAUTY MOLTEN LIQUID EYESHADOW ($4.00), e.l.f. Cosmetics
This is another one of those effortless, easy, on-the-go products. When you want a little something extra on your eyes, but don’t want to go through the trouble of creating a whole look with 10 different eyeshadows and a ton of blending, this is a great product. These liquid eyeshadows from e.l.f. come in six, metallic, almost wet-looking shades. They glide onto the eyes easily, and can be blended out with either a finger or brush. They can be used on their own for a pop of metallic sheen, or used as an eyeshadow base to intensify powder products.
COLOURPOP SUPER SHOCK SHADOW IN GAME FACE ($5.00), ColourPop Cosmetics
I don’t know how ColourPop does it, but they make so many wonderful products at an incredible price point. Their Super Shock Shadows take some getting used to, but I absolutely love them. These shadows have a bouncy, cream-to-powder consistency, and pack a lot of punch. The metallics are unbelievably foiled, and they don’t crease on me at all. I find that these shadows apply best with a finger, though you can certainly blend out any edges with a brush. The color range of these shadows is great and Game Face is one of my absolute favorites. It’s a burnt, metallic copper, perfect for any skin tone or eye color.
LORAC UNZIPPED GOLD PALETTE ($42.00), Ulta
LORAC makes some of the best eyeshadows out there. Their shadows are highly-pigmented, soft, blendable and buildable. Their Pro palettes are incredibly popular, but I think their Unzipped Gold Palette is perfect for the summer. This palette is full of warm, golden tones, and has a combination of both mattes and intense shimmers. There are deeper tones to create depth and smoky looks, and lighter, vibrant shades for my day-appropriate looks. The palette also comes with a mini eyeshadow primer to help your eyeshadow stay in tact throughout the day.
KAT VON D TATTOO LINER ($20.00), Sephora
If you’re a sweater (one who sweats a lot, not an article of clothing), but love liquid liner, this waterproof liquid liner from Kat Von D may be a good option for you. This liner is very pigmented, dries down matte, and is pretty much everything-resistent. The felt-tip applicator is extremely fine, allowing excellent control and precision.
MAYBELLINE EYE STUDIO LASTING DRAMA GEL LINER ($8.99), Ulta
This is one of my favorite gel liners, drugstore or high-end. It claims to be smudge-proof and waterproof – while I don’t necessarily agree with those claims, it is incredibly long-lasting. It lasts on my waterline well, and is extremely pigmented.
MARC JACOBS HIGHLIGNER GEL EYE CRAYON IN RO(COCOA) ($25.00), Sephora
If you’re looking for a long-lasting pencil liner, these eyeliners from Marc Jacobs are an amazing option. They come in a ton of different colors in both matte and shimmer finishes. These liners glide on effortlessly, and can be smudged out for a smoky look. Once they set, however, they are set. Seriously, they’re not going anywhere. I love this color in Ro(Cocoa) – it’s a nice, shimmery brown that looks beautiful with a bronze smoky eye.
COLOURPOP BLOTTED LIP IN SUCKER ($5.00), ColourPop Cosmetics
As I mentioned before, ColourPop is one of my absolute favorite brands for affordable, quality products. They recently came out with the Blotted Lips and Ultra Blotted Lips. This Blotted Lip in Sucker has been one of my go-to lip products for the summer. It’s a beautiful, warm coral shade that’s bright without being too much. The Blottted Lip and Ultra Blotted Lip formulas give that popsicle-stained look to the lips. They give a pretty, effortless wash of color, are easily buildable and fade nicely. My only issue is that the formula definitely clings to dry areas on the lips, so be sure to exfoliate and moisturize before applying.
TARTE RAINFOREST OF THE SEA COLOR SPLASH LIPSTICK IN SUNKISSED ($21.00), Sephora
Matte lips have been all da ~*rAgE*~ lately, so this moisture-rich lipstick from Tarte is a welcome change. The Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick formula is rich in both pigment and hydration. They came out with a gorgeous range of colors, with tons of beautiful nudes for every skin tone, and a few fun pops of color (Daiquiri is a gorgeous coral and Berry Mojito is a stunning raspberry shade). My favorite shade is Sunkissed – a perfect mix of peach and pink. Also, this packaging. I die.
SUN BUM SUNSCREEN LIP BALM SPF 30 ($3.99), Ulta
I’m guilty of neglecting my lips as far as suncare goes. This moisturizing lip balm from Sun Bum has SPF 30 and comes in a variety of delicious flavors (coconut, key lime, and mango to name a few). As you know, I’m very food-motivated, so this is a plus for me. You can wear it alone on a minimal makeup day, or layer underneath your lip color for sun protection.
URBAN DECAY CHILL COOLING AND HYDRATING SETTING SPRAY ($31.00), Sephora
This setting spray from Urban Decay is actually designed with Temperature Control Technology. What? It literally chills your makeup to keep it looking fresh for up to 12 hours. The All-Nighter setting spray from Urban Decay is another fantastic option.
MILANI MAKE IT LAST SETTING SPRAY ($10.00), Milani
The drugstore is getting in on the setting spray action, and doing a damn good job. Milani came out with the Make It Last setting spray, which keeps makeup looking fresh for up to 16 hours. It can also be used to prime the face before applying makeup. This setting spray is great for my oilier friends, as it helps to mattify. It also smells so good.
COVER FX ILLUMINATING SETTING SPRAY ($31.00), Sephora
Alright, this one is for my people who really want to glow. This isn’t a dewy-finish setting spray. This spray sets makeup, and actually has little shimmer particles in it, so let that be known. This is gorgeous if you want an all-over highlighter – I think it’s lovely on the collarbone and shoulders, and the face if you really want that glow. Be sure to shake the bottle well before spraying!
OKAY, I’m finally done. I could go on and on but I won’t. Stay tuned for my video swatching and talking about my favorite lip colors for the summer, and let me know if there any other products you’d like me to go more in depth about!
